Staffing :: Street Mileage :: Pavement Maintenance
Other Maintenance Services :: Report a Problem

Staffing

Five full-time employees, one supervisor and two part-time employees who work April through November currently staff our Street Division.

Street Mileage

We maintain the following mileage within the City of Lapeer:

  • State Trunkline Mileage = 2.031 Miles
  • Major Street Mileage = 17.313 Miles
  • (3) Local Street Mileage = 19.585 Miles
  • Total: 38.929 Miles

Pavement Maintenance

Pavement maintenance techniques consist of several different types of applications that are used for routine maintenance of a roadway surface.

  • Slurry Seal is a surface application applied to an asphalt roadway and is used primarily to extend the life of an existing bituminous surface until a permanent repair or reconstruction can be accomplished.
  • Crack Sealing is used to fill cracks that develop in an asphalt surface with a melted emulsion material and prevents surface water from entering the subbase and weakening the roadway.
  • Cold Patching is a temporary repair to a spot weakness in an asphalt or concrete surface of a roadway until a permanent repair can be made.
  • Sweeping is a surface maintenance operation used to keep the street surfaces clean and clear of debris during the months of April through November.

Other Maintenance Services

Annually, additional maintenance services consist of:

  • Updating traffic counts
  • Conducting traffic studies
  • Contracting pavement marking
  • Repairing, replacing and installing new signage
  • Retaining traffic signals
  • Winter maintenance

Retaining traffic signals
We currently maintain and operate 10 signalized intersections. Since 2000, we have aggressively upgraded and replaced outdated traffic controllers and signals owned and operated by the City. During this time, three new signals were installed and six intersections have been upgraded with the remainder of the upgrades to be completed this year.

Winter maintenance
Winter maintenance is a large budgetary expense and responsibility. After an average winter storm with snow accumulating four or more inches, a plow truck will travel more than two hundred miles to blade the city streets. Yearly salt usage for the City of Lapeer averages 1,000 tons.
